LA OBESIDAD COMO ENFERMEDAD
Con el fin de influir positivamente en la salud pública, la Asociación Médica Americana (AMA) la obesidad fue declarada como una enfermedad, lo que significa que ahora requiere que se considere su tratamiento médico y, sobre todo, un enfoque en la prevención. Mientras que una discusión animada evalúa los pros y los contras de la declaración de AMA- con argumentos razonados en ambos lados- profesioanles de la aptitud de la salud deben reconocer las oportunidades profesionales que se centren en los servicios de prevención.
¿Cuál será la decisión a cambiar?
Uno de cada tres estadounidenses se ve afectado por la obesidad, y la AMA cree que el reconocimiento de esta condición como una enfermedad permitirá:
- aumentar la capacidad del individuo para recibir ayuda adicional de la comunidad médica.
- Mejorar las decisiones políticas con respecto a las comunidad rápida, la salud pública y otros factores comunitarios que afectan a la obesidad.
- Proporcionar una mayor atención de la salud y la cobertura de seguro para los servicios de prevención y tratamiento de la obesidad, como la formación personal, servicios de nutrición y entrenamiento de salud.
La atención debería concentrarse en que los servicos de prevencion se pueden utilizar para ayudar a reducir la obesidad. Esto requerirá de una inversión de tiempo, seria de fitness, wellness y los profesionales de la deportología y de la nutrición, para promover los coportamientos y servicios de prevención que puedan ayudar a reducir las tasas de obesidad.
Atención preventiva y servicios de bienestar
La AMA quiere que los médicos puedan prescribir los servicios de prevención a las personas, y tienen estos servicios cubiertos por las aseguradoras de salud. Esto podría tener un gran impacto en las personas obesas que están dispuestos a hacer un cambio de estilo de vida, pero no saben por donde empezar o no pueden pagar la formación u otros servicios preventivos.
Actualmente se comenzaron a dictar cursos para médicos generales y de especialidades para aprender a prescribir. En la Argentina están a cargo del Dr. Jorge Franchella y un staff de profesionales idóneos bajo la supervisión de EIM de Latinoamérica. Los entrenadores personales tienen el potencial de crear un cambio positivo en la salud pública, pero deben primero estar supervisados por médicos que hayan sido capacitados adecuadamente, ello evita que se intervenga en situaciones que podrían ser de riesgo, por ejemplo ante la presencia de enfermedades que podrían no ser detectadas por prefesionales no médicos.
