Ejercicio es Medicina tiene como misión el “procurar que la actividad física y el ejercicio sean ejes centrales en la prevención y tratamiento integral de enfermedades, así como en los diálogos sobre salud, bienestar y calidad de vida”. En su visión, el programa se orienta a que “la actividad física y el ejercicio sean parte fundamental en la prevención y el tratamiento de las enfermedades crónico-degenerativas en la población costarricense”.
La salud, un trabajo en equipo
La iniciativa de Ejercicio es Medicina alienta a que todos los profesionales de la salud independientemente de su especialidad, evalúen y revisen el programa de actividad física de cada paciente durante la visita médica, con el fin de que ésta sea considerada en forma real y efectiva como parte integral del plan para el tratamiento de los pacientes; de igual manera la iniciativa recomienda referir a los pacientes a un profesional en ejercicio y aptitud fisica certificado con el fin de que, en forma conjunta, sean parte del equipo multidisciplinario que complemente la red de cuido del paciente tanto a nivel de prevención como de tratamiento.

“Ejercicio es medicina” divulga la recomendación propuesta por parte de las Guías Americanas de Actividad Física del 2008 que aconsejan a todo adulto sano con edad entre los 18 a los 64 años, el realizar actividad física aeróbica de intensidad moderada por un mínimo de 30 minutos al día durante 5 dias a la semana o al menos de 15 a 20 minutos de actividad física aeróbica de intensidad vigorosa, de a 3 a 4 dias a la semana.
