El ACSM empuja e integra la investigación científica y provee aplicaciones prácticas y educacionales de la ciencia del ejercicio y medicina del deporte.
Historia
El Colegio Americano de medicina del deporte (ACSM) es una asociación de prefesionales quienes tienen el compromiso en la investigación del rol de la medicina y el ejercicio con el fin de lograr una sociedad mas saludable. Fundada en 1954, ACSM permanece comprometido en el diagnóstico, tratamiento y prevención de las lesiones relacionadas al deporte, y a la promoción de la actividad física.
Membresía
Es la asociación mas importante de medicina del deporte y la ciencia del ejercicio en el mundo. ACSM representa a más de 40000 miembros y certifica a profesionales de diversas especialidades médicas, relacionados a la salud y a disciplinas científicas. Los miembros están clasificados en tres categorias:
- Medicina: Los miembros son Doctores en Medicina o tienen un Doctorado en Medicina. Éstos trabajan en hospitales, clínicas de medicina deportiva, colegios de medicina, entre otros.
- Ciencias Básicas y Aplicadas: Incluyen deportólogos, Directores del programa del ejercicio y bioquímicos. Los miembros trabajan en instituciones como la NASA, Fuerza Militar Estadounidense, y Centro para el Control y Prevención de Enfermedades, por nombrar algunos.
- Educación y conexo a la salud: Es decir, profesores de educación física, enfermeras,entrenadores atléticos,físicos terapeutas.
Beneficios
Los miembros de ACSM ganan suscripciones para sus publicaciones profesionales descuentos en conferencias y aplicación de certificaciones, acceso al libro de servicios, inclusión al Directorio online de miembros. Estos beneficios son para profesionales en entrenamiento y para aquellos estudiantes quienes aseguren un futuro brillante para el ACSM.
Marco histórico – ACSM en Indiana
Como parte de una iniciativa, al principio de la década del 80, para presentar a Indianópolis como la capital del mundo del deporte, líderes de empresas locales y oficiales de la cuidad entregaron una propuesta a los ejectuvos del CSM para mover su centro nacional desde Madison, Wisc., a Indianapolis. En 1983, “ACSM Trustees”aprobó la propuesta y despegó en lo que se convertiría en faro para el desarrollo del centro de la cuidad. Titulado como la “piedra angular”de la capital de los deportes amateur. En Octubre de 1984, Indianapolis se convirtio en el hogar del equipo de ACSM.
